Barbara Buntin - Artist Statement
Through constant observation, empathy and wonder, I gather creative inspiration from the evolution of everyday life. My work relates to shared experience and connection, using the universal and timeless image of the human figure.
The foundation of my work is monotype on washi in conjunction with collage, using papers I have previously printed. Supporting elements may include linotype printing, pastel and dry brush. The texture of the washi is enhanced through repeated printing and shaping, and then highlighted by custom wooden shadow box framing.
Beginning with a drawing from a live model, the focus is set by iconic poses, suggesting inner reflection and stillness. Through repeated layering of monotype prints and collage elements, depth and texture are created that relate to skin and bone, earth and water. As I follow the process and energy of the work, I often allow the figure to dissolve into its surroundings, echoing a release into a meditative state.
